Easter Island is located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, and it is one of the most isolated islands on Earth where the nearest continental point is 3,550km far away. It has become famous for its 887 extant monumental statues, called “Moai” which became a big tourist attraction.
These statues were carved by the Rapu Nai people sometime between 1250 and 1500 CE. According to some researches these heads represent ancestors that are seen as deities. There are many still unanswered questions about these remarkable statues, but what scientists revealed recently makes them even more mysterious!
As it appears these stunning faces have bodies underneath which extend meters underground. To make it even more incredible the bodies are covered in ancient and as of yet indecipherable writings called petroglyphs. It is definitely an amazing discovery and who knows what other secrets lie around and are just waiting to be revealed.
